PREPARING FOR GOKHALE? HERE'S ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW!

Helloo there! Prepping for Economics master's entrance exam can be a task, literally! It's not as easy as everyone thinks of it. This will rather be an informative blog for Gokhale entrance takers. So, here's alll you need to know (this experience is of the year 2019-20 and independent of the other experiences)

ENTRANCE EXAM- PATTERN

So, the pattern is easy enough to understand and is divided into three sections i.e. Aptitude, Basic Economics, General Economic policies/ static economics knowledge. The third section seems very confusing isn't it? Let me explain through an example. So, I remember one of the questions of that section being, What are the tax slabs introduced under GST?

Other than that, the paper has 'no negative marking' and is rather a fine paper to solve. It is a hand-written OMR based paper. This time, it might be online due to Covid scenario (not aware of the current procedure)

HOW TO PREPARE?

Preparation of this paper doesn't have to be of a special nature, it comes along with the prep of any paper. For Aptitude section, there are several websites that provide you with basic questions of time, distance, speed or work energy based questions (these are not the topics, just giving an example as aptitude can be from a wide range of topics). But, I practiced from sample papers given to me by my coaching. For people not taking any coaching, I have mentioned an alternative above. Then, the second section has questions testing your basics, which can be related to micro, macro, econometrics, statistics or maybe even developmental economics. You must have had the practice of that solving the sample question papers of JNU, CUCET, JAMIA etc. These papers are very different from DSE and ISI entrances as they test you of your basics and do not ask you to apply that knowledge. The third section again, if you've been reading newspapers you might be able to answer questions fairly. Since, there is a lot of uncertainity in the last section, there is no guarantee of any kind of questions asked.

HOW I PREPARED

I had joined a coaching for this. Regarding any paper, it's important to have that habit of self study. I tried to keep up with revising my class notes and practicing some papers. The energy and motivation however you get in the ending months, cannot be compared to that of the previous months. This is not just about Gokhale but for any paper, that you have to practice as many question papers as you can  and since you guys recieved a lot of time this year, you guys are expected to be well prepared. However, we tend to take it slow whenever we have time and I understand that and this is nothing to be worried about :)

SELECTION CRITERIA

Gokhale follows a very simple criteria of selection i.e. through your ranks and preferences. So, for eg. The first 30 rankers will be getting the mail in the first phase offering admission according to their first or second preferences depending on whether the seats have been filled or not. So, I recieved a decent rank of 124 and managed to get Financial Economics that I preferred the most. But, I took admission in the IBEF course and later got upgraded to FE. Each course has 40 seats approximately.

HOSTEL FACILITY

Hostel is provided to majorly all the outstation students because majority of them are outstations only. Infact, depending on the seats available, it can also be provided to localites.
Hostel is decent for girls, as in first year you share the room with 3 people in wing A or if you come late, you can also get a room in another wing (sharing it with one person) i.e. B. For boys, earlier the conditions weren't that good but the hostels are getting revamped so maybe you can expect much better conditions now.

PLACEMENT SCENARIO

Now, this is what everybody looks forward to while taking admission. Gokhale, in my first year had its best placement drive with companies like JP Morgan& Chase, Deloitte, Citibank, HSBC, Axis Bank, Ken Research, Ernst & Young and many more visiting the college where majority of the students managed to get placed with a range of packages. JPMC came for the profiles of risk and data analyst offering 15L, Citi offered 11L and Deloitte- 10L and others with less than 10L. However, due to Covid, things are pretty uncertain for us and for any batch whatsoever as people from major IIM's have gotten their internship and placement offers cancelled and same is the case for us. This year, RBI had also offered internships to the the students and you can see people interning at Think tanks too in our college.

NEW COURSE INTRODUCED

This year, there has been a new course introduced i.e. M.A economics other than the Msc General Economics they offer each year, which is majorly for the localites (as much as I know) since Msc Gen eco used to have a 50% reservation for people belongimg to Maharasthra.

FACULTY

Faculty of this college is like any other college, I'm not making any comparisons with DSE or ISI here. But, as any college has some good and bad teachers, that is the case in Gokhale as well. There is visiting faculty each year who specialise in their field so they are pretty good at what they teach!

CULTURAL LIFE

Gokhale has a very good cultural life where the cultural committee celebrates all kind of festivals so that the people don't get homesick. We have committees for various things such as a quizzing club, dance committee, sports committee and much more. Then we have our annual economics fest as well.

Life in Pune is pretty chill and the weather here is also pretty good (especially for the people coming from Delhi)! And, the picture that I've put above is of our hostel campus only. Pretty, right?

WHY I CHOSE GOKHALE?

See, I wanted a comparitively chill environment for me to study as DSE and ISI would've become very competitive for me, honestly! For people like me, you can go for MSE or Gokhale.
And this is not to demotivate people preparing for DSE or ISI but I have great respect for you guys and the faculty and placements there are no doubt really good and infact the best! Moreover, I wanted my options to be open for both research and corporate world. So, that also played a role in my decision.

Next up, I'll be writing about my entrance preparation for IIFT and my selection. Stay tuned :)

Until then, adios!
